About Green Lane, Pennsylvania

Green Lane is the smallest municipality in the Upper Perkiomen Valley, a borough of roughly 500 residents covering about three-tenths of a square mile in northwestern Montgomery County. It was once part of Marlborough Township and was incorporated in December 1875, but its story reaches back much further. In 1733, Thomas Mayburry built Green Lane Forge, the earliest ironworks in the Perkiomen Valley, and the town is named for the evergreens that once shaded the winding lane leading to the forge. The ironmaster's house at 100 Main Street, known today as the William and Caroline Schall House, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

The borough's Pennsylvania German heritage lives on at Red Men's Hall on Gravel Pike, a 1908 lodge building that has been home to the Goschenhoppen Historians and their museum since 1971. Just outside town, Green Lane Park spreads across roughly 3,400 acres of Montgomery County parkland, with trails, water, a band shell that hosts summer concerts, and the annual Upper Perkiomen Bird and Wildlife Festival. Green Lane shares the Upper Perkiomen School District with Red Hill, Pennsburg, and East Greenville, and its homes and businesses use the 18054 ZIP code.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between direct cremation and cremation with a service?

Direct cremation takes place without a viewing or ceremony beforehand, and the cremated remains are returned to your family. Cremation with a service adds a gathering, either a visitation and funeral before cremation or a memorial service afterward. Both are available, and many families choose a combination.

Who can authorize a cremation in Pennsylvania?

Authorization generally comes from the legal next of kin, beginning with a surviving spouse and then adult children, parents, and siblings, unless the person named someone in writing beforehand. We review the paperwork with you and make sure the correct signatures are in place.

How long does cremation take after we first call?

Timing depends mostly on paperwork, including the death certificate, the required county approval, and the family's signed authorization. We give you a realistic estimate on the first call and keep you updated until your loved one's remains are ready to be returned.

What can we do with the cremated remains?

Families keep remains at home in an urn, bury them in a cemetery plot, place them in a columbarium niche, or divide them among relatives in smaller keepsakes. Scattering is also an option, with permission from the landowner or the agency that manages the property.
