IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gabriel
Ott
January 11, 1936 – March 17, 2025
Gabriel Ott of Schwenksville, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 89 on March 17, 2025. Born on January 11, 1936 in Perkiomen Township, he was one of 12 siblings born to Christopher and Lydia (Updegrove) Ott.
Gabriel (Gabe) was married to his wife, Marie (Myers) Ott, until her passing in 2020, which made for 62 years they had spent together.
Many people know Gabe from his most proud accomplishment, his greenhouses. In 1971 Gabe and his eldest son, Gabriel Ott, Jr., started out on their own business venture, a greenhouse on a little side-shoot road just outside of Schwenksville, which they called Gabriel Ott and Sons Meng Road Greenhouses. He was proud of what he had established and loved to take on a challenge, nothing could stop Gabe. They had built the greenhouses from floor to ventilators with strength, will, and determination to create a plant-lovers dream. As if working and running a greenhouse weren't enough, in the evenings over the years he also baked hundreds of shoo-fly pies, which he loved sharing and bragging about with frequent customers.
Gabe loved giving out free plants to children coming to the greenhouse and showing extra charm to the ladies that would peruse the aisles looking for plants. He was always quick-witted and cherished a good (sometimes dirty) joke. Gabe may have been frugal, but he generously loved God and his ever-growing family. His ambitious spunk and never-wilting energy to work, and then work some more, was never more apparent than when he lost most of his eyesight and developed advanced dementia. Still, he would work in the greenhouse, sticking cuttings, or repotting plants. If his hands weren't in dirt, he wasn't happy.
After a very full life, Gabe leaves behind his son Gabriel Ott, Jr. (Lois), daughter Robin Pennington (Jonathan), and son John Ott, 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and more than a few pineapple plants, orchids, and fig trees. Preceding him in death were his wife Marie, brothers Cleveland, Carl, Christopher, Roger, Samuel, and his sisters Marie, Clara, Sara, Ruth, Rosena, and Elsie.
Gabe's work ethic, fearlessness and determination have sprouted and will continue to thrive in his family and the countless people he met along the way.
