IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy K.
Davis
December 5, 1932 – May 29, 2025
Dorothy Mona Koch Davis, aged 92, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, in the home of her daughter, Dawn and son-in-law, Wayne, who live in Red Hill, PA. Dorothy lived a life defined by significant personal and career achievements in the field of education and in the dog show community. She was a woman who set high standards for herself and those around her in every endeavor, achieving notoriety and recognition everywhere she went.
"Dottie," was born December 5th, 1932, to Sidney and Miriam Koch of Altoona, PA. After graduating from Altoona High School, Dorothy was accepted to nursing school at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, PA. While working in the operating room, she met and later married her husband, John M. Davis. Dottie and John moved to Shamokin, PA after John completed medical school.
In the 1960's, Dottie attended Bloomsburg University earning her bachelor's degree, master's degree, and her teaching certificate. She taught English and writing skills to several generations of students at Southern Colombia High School where she acquired a reputation for demanding excellence from students in English composition classes. She was elected in later years as the President of the PA Counsel of Teachers of English, and she served on the Middle States Evaluation Committee establishing high standards for college certification of English teachers.
Dottie retired from teaching to enter the competitive world of dog breeding. She focused on Great Danes, raised several champion Danes herself, and became a certified ring steward with the American Kennel Club. During her time working with the AKC, she picked up the nickname "The Candy Lady" for supplying the judges and staff at dog shows with an abundance of sweet treats! In her later years she was a finalist for the lifetime achievement award given annually by the AKC.
Dottie was married to Dr. John Davis for 52 years. Together they had five children, 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Dottie leaves behind a significant legacy in the dog show community, in the lives of her students from Southern Columbia High School, and in the lives of her children and succeeding generations. She was a force who lived a long life, and she lived it on her terms.
Special thanks go to the Grandview Hospice organization for their care and support in Dottie's last three months. Dottie requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to "Take the Lead" an organization that supports purebred dogs with a life-threatening illness. Contact them at 131 Washington Street, Suite 306, Watertown, NY 13601.
Arrangements were carried out by the Monaghan Funeral Home in Red Hill, PA. The burial ceremony will be a private family event.
